Abstract:
Innovation measurement is a key component of research and policy work aiming at gauging the potential of firms, industries and regions. Patents are by far the preferred metrics, yet they have several known shortcomings. In this talk I will discuss the value added of using trademarks in combination with patents to improve innnovation measurement. After reviewing the existing evidence, I will present fresh results from a survey of Dutch innovators. We find that combining trademarks with patent statistics results in a 46% improvement of innovation measurement. Improvements mainly cover innovation coming from smaller, younger and service innovators.
