Abstract:

We use a sample of Swedish male and female decision-makers in a single organization to test the link between testosterone concentration (TC) and importance beliefs in status cues salient to higher-status individuals. This mixed-sex setting allows us to test a biological sex difference in status-seeking behavior. In male but not in female decision-makers we find that TC is associated with greater importance beliefs in performance areas salient to their managers in spite of no such belief difference across gender. Our results are robust against several control variables and suggest that the sex difference predicted by TC in status cue beliefs exists in settings characterized by high gender equality.
